Packing List:

 

Summer Overnight Hike Packing List
Gear

1 cup ~ optional

1 spoon
1 bowl
Bear resistant container or sack (sleeping bag stuff sack) & lightweight rope
Two 1-gallon zipper bags for garbage or wet dirty clothes
Toothpaste & toothbrush
Toilet paper – small amount & sandwich size zip bags
Sun screen ~ small size container
Insect repellant
Towel ~ small one!
Flashlight (very small or a headlamp)
Nalgene (or similar) water bottle, full of water
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Backpack
Underwear
Long pants ~ synthetic or wind-resistant sport pants
10 essentials kit ~ most of the ten essentials are already covered in this list
Lightweight raincoat
Lightweight socks to wear in camp
Long sleeve synthetic fleece pullover or zip up
warm hat
Clean shirt for Day 2
 
What to wear while hiking
Lightweight shorts or long pants (track pants are okay)
Synthetic t-shirt (cotton might be okay)
Hat for sun protection
Sunglasses ~ optional
Wool or synthetic hiking socks (regular cotton socks are NOT okay)
Hiking boots (for this short hike, VERY comfortable walking shoes are okay)
Lightweight underwear
 
Food
Saturday Lunch: Sandwich or other sack lunch ~ carry out all garbage!
Dinner:
  1 Mountain House freeze dried dinner packet (1 or 2 serving size) OR hefty sandwich ~   
  note: a light eater will want only a 1 serving size packet or a smaller sandwich
  can eat a dessert choice after dinner
Breakfast:
  Instant oatmeal, 2-3 packets (or other easy breakfast)
  Hot chocolate in small zipper bag or tea, if desired (if not, don’t bring a cup)
  Dried fruit (whatever: raisins, bananas, mango…) ~ repackage in sandwich zip bag
Snacks or desserts:
  Peanuts or other nuts ~ can be mixed with dried fruit or kept separate
  Cookies
  Candy bar ~ optional
Sunday lunch  only bring if you need a lunch in the backcountry:
1 apple, if you like apples
  1 hard cooked egg
  1 or 2 string cheese OR 1 serving beef jerky
  1 or 2 tortillas or flatbread
 
 
You will be sharing and maybe carrying; bring if you have them
Tent ~ lightweight only
Fuel, pot, stove, matches, pot lifter (bring all of these cook items or none; it won’t help to 
   just bring a pot without a stove. The stove-owner will bring his pot.)
Water filter

Tentative itinerary

Meet at the Safeway parking lot on Saturday morning.

Drive to trailhead.

Begin hike; stop on the way to perform a service project.

Continue hiking.

Arrive, set up camp, eat lunch, tour area, work on Scout Skills.

Dinner.

Sleep.

Breakfast.

Break camp, hike back to trailhead, drive back to Safeway.  Not sure when you eat lunch; Mr Fox will explain on Monday June 9
